Korea & China’s First Ladies Finally Meet, and It’s Super Wholesome!

First Ladies’ First Meeting!

Hey everyone! So, some really nice news coming out of the world of politics. South Korea’s First Lady, Kim Hye-kyung (the wife of President Lee Jae-myung), just had her very first official meeting with China’s First Lady, Peng Liyuan, in Beijing on January 5th. The two met for tea while their husbands held a summit. Honestly, the pictures and stories from their chat are just so friendly and warm, it’s a nice break from the usual serious political news.

A Fangirl Moment in Beijing

Okay, this is the cutest part. Our First Lady, Kim Hye-kyung, told Peng Liyuan, “I’ve actually been a fan of yours for a long time.” How sweet is that? She also mentioned that she had been really looking forward to meeting Peng Liyuan during the APEC summit held in Korea last year and was pretty sad when she couldn’t make it. It really set a super friendly and personal tone for their first-ever meeting. It’s cool to see that even first ladies can have fangirl moments!

China’s First Lady Loves K-Culture!

In response, Peng Liyuan was also incredibly gracious and had amazing things to say about Korea. She reminisced about her state visit back in 2014, when she explored the beautiful Changdeokgung Palace and even went shopping at the famous Dongdaemun Market at night. She said that what stuck with her the most was how warm and welcoming Korean people are, saying it left a “deep impression” on her. We love to hear it!

More Than Just Politics

What makes their connection even cooler is that both women have backgrounds in music! First Lady Kim majored in piano, while Peng Liyuan is a famous singer. This shared interest likely helped them connect on a more personal level. While their husbands were discussing big national topics, it’s really heartwarming to see a friendly, personal bond forming between the two first ladies. It’s these small, human moments that can make a big difference in the relationship between countries. A great start to the new year for diplomacy!
