Korea’s ‘Elizabeth Taylor’, Legendary Actress Kim Ji-mee, Passes Away at 85

A True Legend of Korean Cinema Has Left Us

Hey everyone, I have some somber news to share today that has left all of Korea in mourning. The iconic veteran actress, Kim Ji-mee, has passed away at the age of 85. The Korean Film Actors’ Association confirmed that she passed away in the United States. Her health had reportedly gotten worse due to complications from shingles. For those of you who might not know her, Kim Ji-mee was a true titan of the Korean silver screen, often called the “Korean Elizabeth Taylor” because of her stunning looks, immense popularity, and her glamorous life.

The Face of an Era

Kim Ji-mee wasn’t just an actress; she was *the* face of Korean cinema’s golden age from the 1950s through the 1980s. She starred in over 700 films! Can you even imagine? She debuted in 1957 when she was just 17, cast by the famous director Kim Ki-young for his film *Twilight Express*. From there, she just exploded into stardom. She was more than just a pretty face; she was an icon who represented the hopes and dreams of a generation on screen. She worked with all the master directors of her time, like Im Kwon-taek, and won countless awards for her powerful performances in classics like *The Land* and *Gilsotteum*.

A Pioneer Beyond Acting

What’s super cool about her is that she didn’t stop at acting. In 1985, she founded her own movie production company called ‘JM Film’ (‘Ji-mee Film’). She became a producer and a powerful voice in the industry, even serving on the Korea Film Council to help protect and grow our local cinema. She was a real trailblazer, stepping into roles that were traditionally held by men and fighting for the film community. She was a true ‘shield’ for the industry.

Remembering a Star

Her passing is a huge loss, and the entire film industry is coming together to honor her. The Korean Film Actors’ Association is preparing a “film industry funeral” (영화인장), which is a special service reserved for the most respected figures in cinema. While they decided against a full-scale event, a memorial space is being planned to celebrate her incredible life and contributions. She was a legend who lived a full life, both on and off the screen, and she will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Kim Ji-mee.
