Major Shake-Up at Korea’s E-Commerce King
Okay, so if you’ve ever been to Korea, you know Coupang is EVERYTHING. From groceries delivered in hours to random electronics, they’re the go-to for online shopping. That’s why it was such a big deal when news broke about a massive data breach. We’re talking names, emails, and even apartment door codes for 33.7 million people were exposed. As you can imagine, everyone was freaking out.

The CEO Takes Responsibility
In a classic move of taking responsibility, the CEO of Coupang’s Korean unit, Park Dae-jun, announced his resignation today. He released a statement saying he was “deeply sorry for disappointing the public” and felt a “heavy sense of responsibility” for the whole situation. It was a pretty sudden departure, coming just a couple of weeks after the leak was first confirmed.
America to the Rescue?
This is where it gets interesting for you guys back in the States. Instead of promoting from within, Coupang’s US parent company, Coupang, Inc., immediately sent in one of their big guns. Harold Rogers, the Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel from the US headquarters, has been appointed as the interim CEO for the Korean operations. He’s apparently a close aide to Coupang’s founder, Bom Kim, and his appointment is seen as a sign that the US headquarters is taking direct control to manage the crisis.
What Happens Now?
Rogers’ main job is to calm everyone down, restore customer trust, and beef up security so this never happens again. The Korean government is also getting heavily involved, with police even raiding Coupang’s headquarters in Seoul to investigate what went wrong. This whole scandal is a huge deal here and is making every company rethink how they protect our data. It’s a reminder that even the biggest companies can have major slip-ups!
