Korea’s Viral Grandpa ‘Haldambi,’ Who Danced Into Our Hearts, Passes Away

Remembering Korea’s Beloved Viral Star

Hey everyone, I have some bittersweet news to share today. You might remember a few years ago when a video of an elderly man absolutely crushing a K-Pop dance routine went viral. That was Mr. Ji Byung-soo, affectionately nicknamed ‘Haldambi,’ and it was reported today that he passed away back in October at the age of 82.

For those who might not know, ‘Haldambi’ is a cute nickname that combines ‘Halabeoji’ (Grandpa) and the name of K-Pop star Son Dam-bi. Mr. Ji became an overnight celebrity in 2019 after his unforgettable performance on a super famous, long-running Korean TV show called “National Singing Contest.”

The Performance That Captured a Nation

“National Singing Contest” (전국노래자랑) is basically a wholesome institution in Korea. It travels to different neighborhoods, and local people get on stage to sing their hearts out. It’s been on forever and everyone from kids to grandparents watches it. In March 2019, then 77-year-old Mr. Ji, calling himself the “Dandy of Jongno,” got on stage and performed Son Dam-bi’s iconic 2008 hit, “Crazy.” His surprisingly slick moves and pure, unadulterated joy were so infectious that he didn’t just win the ‘Popularity Award’ on the show; he won the entire country’s heart. The video exploded online, and just like that, ‘Haldambi’ became a star.

A True Inspiration

After his performance, Mr. Ji’s life changed completely. He was suddenly in high demand, appearing on major talk shows like “You Quiz on the Block,” starring in commercials, and even releasing his own book. He was living proof that it’s never too late to chase your dreams or just have fun. Despite facing hardships earlier in life—losing his fortune and living as a basic livelihood recipient—he always maintained a positive and joyful spirit, which is what people loved so much about him. He inspired so many people to not be afraid of their age and to live life to the fullest.

Thank You for the Smiles

According to the reports, Mr. Ji passed away from old age after battling a chronic illness. Although he didn’t have immediate family to hold a big funeral, his close friends and two adopted sons were by his side. Fans are leaving touching comments on his YouTube channel, saying things like, “Thanks for all the laughs,” and “If there’s a next life, please become a singer.” He truly brought so much unexpected joy and laughter to Korea. Rest in peace, Haldambi. We’ll never forget your amazing energy.
