A Real-Life Nightmare
Okay, you guys, this is one of those stories that is just too wild to be true, but it is. You know Nana, the stunningly talented actress and former member of the iconic K-Pop group After School? She’s currently going through an absolutely insane ordeal. Last November, a man armed with a weapon broke into her family’s home. Her mother was attacked and even choked by the intruder. It was a terrifying home invasion, and both Nana and her mom were injured in the process.
The Most Audacious Lawsuit Ever
After the incident, police investigated and rightfully concluded that Nana and her mother acted in self-defense. [2, 14] The man was arrested and charged with special aggravated robbery. End of story, right? Wrong. In a twist that has all of Korea saying “적반하장!” (we’ll get to that later), the robber has decided to sue Nana from prison. His charge? Attempted murder and aggravated assault. [1, 14] He is now changing his story, claiming he wasn’t armed and that Nana’s actions while defending her family were too aggressive. The victim of a violent home invasion is now being sued by her attacker for fighting back. The sheer audacity is just unbelievable.
Her Agency and Fans Are Fighting Back
As you can imagine, this has caused a massive uproar. Nana’s agency, Sublime, released a powerful statement. They said the robber is showing zero remorse and is shamelessly “exploiting the fact that the victim is a public figure to inflict secondary harm through inhumane acts.” Apparently, Nana had initially considered being lenient due to the man’s age, but after this lawsuit, her agency has promised to take all possible civil and criminal legal actions against him. What “Jeok-ban-ha-jang” Means
So, what’s that Korean phrase I mentioned, “적반하장” (jeok-ban-ha-jang)? It doesn’t have a perfect English equivalent, but it’s like saying, “The thief cries thief!” or “Look who’s talking!” It describes a situation where the person who is clearly in the wrong has the nerve to blame the victim. This concept is exactly why this news is so infuriating to Koreans. The robber isn’t just denying his crime; he’s trying to flip the script and paint the person who defended her own mother as the villain. It’s a level of audacity that’s truly shocking, and everyone is hoping the justice system sees through this ridiculous claim and protects Nana.
