Top Politician Skips President’s New Year’s Party… Because He Didn’t Know the Address?!

He Said… What Now?

Okay, so you know how things can get a little spicy in politics, right? Well, Korea just had a moment that’s both awkward and kinda funny. The leader of the main opposition party, the People Power Party, is a guy named Jang Dong-hyuk. On January 2nd, President Lee Jae-myung hosted a big New Year’s party at the Blue House for all the top officials. Guess who was a no-show? Yep, Mr. Jang.

Later that day, at a different New Year’s event for business leaders, he was asked why he skipped the presidential party. His answer? “I couldn’t attend because I didn’t know the new address.” LOL. The room apparently burst into laughter, though some people thought the joke was a bit much.

A Joke or a Jab?

For my American friends who might not know, the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae) is like the Korean White House, and its address is super famous: 1 Sejong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul. So, saying you don’t know the address is like an American politician saying they can’t find the White House. It’s obviously not true!

청와대

This little comment is being seen as a sarcastic jab at the current president. The political atmosphere here has been pretty tense lately between the ruling party and Jang Dong-hyuk’s opposition party. They’ve been clashing over several new laws, so his skipping the event and then making this joke is basically a political statement saying, “We are not on the same page.”

The Bigger Picture

While the “lost my way” excuse is getting all the headlines, the real reason for his absence is the ongoing political fighting. Jang Dong-hyuk and his party’s leadership decided to boycott the President’s event to show their disapproval of the administration’s recent moves. Instead of going to the Blue House, Jang spent his day meeting with former President Lee Myung-bak, which is another power move to rally his conservative base.

Seoul

So, it wasn’t just a simple scheduling conflict. It was a very public and deliberate snub. It just goes to show how even a New Year’s party can turn into a political battlefield here. We’ll have to see if this frosty relationship thaws out at all in 2026, but this joke definitely kicked the year off with some drama!
