Trot Prince Jeong Dong-won Announces Surprise Marine Corps Enlistment!

From Trot Star to Marine Recruit

Okay, so if you’ve been following the Korean music scene, you know Jeong Dong-won. He became a household name after finishing 5th on the mega-hit audition show “Mr. Trot” back in 2020 when he was just a teenager. Since then, he’s been capturing hearts with his amazing voice and even debuted a K-Pop idol alter ego, JD1.

But today, on December 24th, his agency confirmed the big news: he’s voluntarily enlisting in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps. The enlistment date is set for February 23, 2026, which is literally right after he graduates high school. This is a pretty big deal because most male celebrities tend to push their mandatory service back as far as they can.

So, why the sudden decision to join one of the most challenging military units? It seems like it’s been a long-held dream for him. Jeong Dong-won has mentioned on his YouTube channel before that he wanted to serve in the Marines. He apparently looks up to his dad, who served in the super-elite 707th Special Mission Battalion!

In a video he posted earlier this year, he met with Oh Jong-hyuk (a singer from the group Click-B and a Marine Corps veteran) for advice. Dong-won said, “If you’re born a man, you should serve in the military with pride,” and shared how his dad’s stories inspired him. Talk about family influence!

What is the R.O.K. Marine Corps?

For my American friends who might not know, all able-bodied men in South Korea have to serve in the military. But choosing the Marine Corps is a whole other level. It’s known for its incredibly tough training and discipline. It’s like choosing to become a Navy SEAL when you could just do basic training. It definitely earns you a lot of respect here. For a young star like him to choose this path is seriously impressive.

What’s Next for Jeong Dong-won?

His agency has asked fans to support his decision and to refrain from visiting the enlistment site, as it will be a private event for families. They promised that he will return more mature and healthy after completing his duty.

It’s definitely a shock, but also super cool to see him making such a bold move. We’ll have to wait for his return, but it sounds like he’s ready to take on this new challenge head-on. We’re all wishing him the best and will be waiting for his comeback!
